Shands Opens New Pediatric Emergency Room

Thanks to the supports of several charitable groups, as well as Shands employees and the medical system itself, the area has North Central Florida’s first emergency room specifically geared toward Children.

Located at Shands at the University of Florida, the pediatric ER has such features as a separate entrance with free valet parking calming, child-friendly décor, and child-sized beds and equipment.

“We’ve created an environment just for families, staffed by people committed to the care of children,” said Jennifer Light, M.D., the Pediatric ER medical director.

Among the groups that provided funding for the facility were Dance Marathon, which raised $750,000; the Children’s Miracle Network, which raised $550,000; the Sebastian Ferrero Foundation, which contributed $500,000; and Shands employees, who contributed nearly $300,000; Leo and Nola Flowers, whose estate provided $484,000; and Kay Davison, who contributed $100,000.
