UF Doctor, Scott Rivkees Named State Surgeon General
Governor Ron DeSantis has announced the appointment of Dr. Scott A. Rivkees as Florida Surgeon General and Secretary of the Florida Department of Health.
A practicing pediatric endocrinologist, Dr. Rivkees is a professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine and physician-in-chief of UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, part of UF Health, the university’s academic health center. He also serves as academic chair of pediatrics at Orlando Health and pediatric chair at Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola. During his distinguished career, Dr. Rivkees has served as associate chair of pediatrics for research at the Yale University School of Medicine and on the faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Scott A. Rivkees, M.D., is a professor and chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Florida College of Medicine and physician-in-chief of UF Health Shands Children’s Hospital, part of UF Health, the university’s academic health center. He also serves as academic chair of pediatrics at Orlando Health and pediatric chair at Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart in Pensacola.
Dr. Rivkees is a graduate of Rutgers University and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He authored more than 200 original articles, chapters, and editorials. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Pediatrics Endocrinology, a member of American Society for Clinical Investigation, and served as the director of the multidisciplinary Yale Pediatric Thyroid Center. He is a member of the American Thyroid Association Public Health Committee and is Chair of the Lawson Wilkins Pediatric Endocrine Society Public Policy Committee.
An internationally-renowned expert on developmental biology and pediatric endocrinology, Dr. Rivkees leads a robust clinical and basic science research program. Key areas of study in his lab are the prevention of brain injury in premature infants, the effects of adenosine on the developing embryo, circadian biology and thyroid diseases. In 2009, he detected a safety problem with a common thyroid medication. One in 2,000 children who were on the medication were going into liver failure or dying each year, and his discovery led to global changes in medical practice.
A fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he has been named one of America’s Best Doctors®, as well as one of America’s Top Pediatricians. Dr. Rivkees received the George H. Cook Distinguished Alumnus Award from Rutgers University and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He has been elected to the American Society for Clinical Investigation and to be a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has testified before the U.S. Senate on pediatric issues.
Todd Louis Named Realtor of the Year
The Gainesville-Alachua County Association of Realtors® (GACAR) honored Todd Louis as its 2018 Realtor® of the Year. Louis is a Vice President for Tommy Williams Homes and is celebrating his 18th year as a Realtor®.
The Realtor® of the Year award was presented at the local association’s LAUNCH Leadership Summit at Trinity United Methodist Church with close to 600 people in attendance.
GACAR has presented the Realtor® of the Year award for more than 30 years. Recipients are selected on ethics, character, and personality to be honored as the Realtor® member who demonstrated continued personal involvement and support of GACAR and the real estate profession at a local, state, and national level.
Louis has served on the GACAR Board of Directors, with his devotion and passion for education leading him to chair several committees including Grievance, Professional Standards, and Professional Development. He is the mastermind behind the LAUNCH Leadership Summit and is constantly going above and beyond to deliver meaningful and informative learning opportunities for new and old Realtors® alike. Melinda Dickens, PLA, Joins CHW Planning + Design Team
CHW Professional Consultants, a leading planning, design, surveying, engineering, and construction services firm, has announced the addition of Melinda Dickens, PLA as Senior Project Manager to the Planning + Design team. As Senior Project Manager, Melinda will assist in expanding the capabilities of the team and will ensure the implementation of CHW’s professional services. Her experience in the landscape architecture and urban design fields will assist in leading the department by providing professional direction and proven ability.

Melinda comes to CHW with 30 years of experience in urban design, land planning, and landscape architecture. She has served as a consultant to both public and private clients in a wide array of projects, including project master planning and site planning, redevelopment and urban design, design guidelines assignments, and public involvement campaigns.
Melinda is a Florida Registered Landscape Architect and a graduate of the University of Florida’s Landscape Architecture program holding both a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree from the Design, Planning, and Construction School.
