Gainesville MSA Economics Indicators Report Released

In late January 2020, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO) released December 2019 employment estimates. As a highlight of the Gainesville FL MSA report, the area unemployment posted the following results:

Unemployment. Gainesville FL MSA not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.5% in December 2019. See Page 1 and 4 for more details.

Employment. The nonagricultural employment in the Gainesville MSA was 149,800 in December 2019, up 1,500 jobs compared to a year ago.

Major Industries. 6 out of 10 major industries posted over-the-year gains in December 2019. Employment gains were seen in several industries: Mining, Logging, & Construction (1.7%); Financial Activities (1.5%); Professional & Business Services (3.4%); Education & Health Services (1.5%); Leisure & Hospitality (2.5%); and, Government (1.1%). Trade, Transportation, & Utilities (-1.3%); and, Manufacturing (-4.3%). See Page 2 for more details.

The Alachua County Economic Indicators Report is a publication prepared by Alachua County. This report provides a snapshot of recent changes in the economy of the Gainesville MSA. The MSA is comprised of Alachua County and Gilchrist County. The report draws on official statistics that have been released during the last month. The data published in this publication was gathered from several sources such as Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), National Association of Realtors, Florida Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO), and Office of Economic & Demographic Research.
