Avanti Club of Florida Announces Winterfest in Gainesville

– Avanti Club of Florida

Members of the Avanti Owners Association International will be arriving in Gainesville on Friday, Feb. 7, for a Winterfest at the Best Western Plus Gateway Grand in Gainesville.  The event is sponsored by the Avanti Club of Florida.  The group will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Avanti Club of Florida. The event is expected to draw nearly 100 people with a car show on Saturdayshowcasing about 35 Avantis spanning the years from 1963 to 2007.  The public is invited to the car show on Saturday, Feb. 8, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is a great opportunity to view one of America’s most unique automobiles.

The Avanti automobile was first introduced by Studebaker at the New York Auto Show in April 1962.  The body was to be made of fiberglass, with an optional supercharged engine, and it was an automotive hit, but problems slowed production and by the time Studebaker closed down the South Bend plant only about 4,500 Avantis were produced.

After that initial run, the car changed hands several times and continued to be produced up until 2006.
