UF approves funding to build new, $415 million specialty hospital

UF is going to build a new hospital.

Today, the UF Health Shands board approved funding for the construction of a new specialty hospital, which will include towers for neuromedicine and cardiovascular services. The new hospital “will accommodate anticipated growth in these areas and provide additional space for patients from the main hospital,” according to a UF Health news release.

The new, 216-bed hospital will cost about $415 million. It will be located on Archer Road just east of the UF Health Shands Cancer Hospital. It will also boast 120 ICU beds and 20 state-of-the-art operating rooms. A parking garage will accommodate 600 spaces. The specialty towers will care for patients with neurologic, neurosurgical, heart or vascular conditions.

Work on the site will launch in November, and construction will begin early next year. The building is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2017 and should be open for patients in 2018.

“We are grateful to the board for supporting this effort to expand our medical services for patients who entrust us with their care,” said UF Health president David Guzick in a statement. “The new hospital will establish the highest standard for heart, vascular and neurological care anywhere in the southeast.”
