As the transformation of Gainesville continues to take shape, various neighborhoods are beginning to find new life. The “Midtown” area, in particular, recently underwent an overdue and much needed facelift, with crumbling buildings being torn down to make way for new businesses. Publix recently opened a small concept on the site of the old McDonald’s on 13th and University, and the new location has garnered tremendous response from customers. The Social opened late last year replacing the infamous (and gross) Gator City. Meanwhile, McDonald’s has constructed a brand new modern building off of University Avenue. And old buildings are being renovated to find new life, as well.
Felipe’s Taqueria’s transformation of the former Endzone Bar and Mellow Mushroom location has been well received, taking what was a big blue eyesore and run-down outdoor area and turning it into a clean, usable space. The City of Gainesville even presented Felipe’s with a City Beautification Award for its efforts. As one of the first businesses in the area to really invest in the renaissance of Midtown, this family-owned and operated restaurant is gaining popularity with students and game-day crowds alike for their 2 for 1 margarita Fridays, cheap drinks, and food specials.
